What is an AVIF file, and how to open it or convert it to JPG or PNG

An .avif file is an image in the AV1 Image File Format, a modern format from the Alliance for Open Media. Recent browsers open AVIF directly. For apps that reject it, convert a copy: PNG keeps transparency, JPG makes a smaller file with a white background.

What AVIF is

AVIF stands for AV1 Image File Format. It is a royalty-free image format standardized by the Alliance for Open Media, built on the AV1 video codec. Like WebP, it was designed to give websites smaller files at similar quality, and it supports transparency, HDR and animation. You meet it when a site or an app exports .avif instead of .jpg or .png.

Where AVIF files come from

Websites serve AVIF to speed up their pages, so a saved image can arrive as .avif. Some phones and cameras can capture AVIF, and design tools export it. The file is not broken or dangerous: it is a normal image in a newer container. The problem appears when the next app, a form or an older editor does not accept it.

Open it without converting

Recent versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari all display AVIF, so dragging the file into a browser window is the quickest check. Support in other software depends on the app and its version: some editors and viewers open AVIF natively, others need an update or an extension. If you only need to view the image, a browser is enough.

Convert a copy

  1. Save or copy the .avif file to your computer.
  2. Open the AVIF to PNG converter below in an updated browser.
  3. Choose one or several .avif images, or drop a ZIP of them, and convert.
  4. Download the PNG copies, one by one or as a ZIP. Keep the original AVIF files.

PNG or JPG?

Choose PNG when the image has transparency or you want an exact copy of the decoded pixels. Choose JPG when size matters more and there is no transparency: JPG is smaller but flattens transparent areas onto a white background. TotImage has an AVIF to JPG tool too; the button below opens the PNG one.

What conversion changes

The PNG or JPG you download is a new copy made on your device. TotImage converts the first image or frame, so an animated AVIF becomes a static image, and HDR colours may change. Metadata is not retained, and JPG uses JPEG compression, so a converted JPG can lose a little detail. Keep the AVIF original for archiving and use the copy where you need it.

Keep your originals. Conversion creates a new copy; metadata, HDR and extra frames are not retained.

Questions, answered

Is AVIF better than WebP or JPEG?

AVIF often produces smaller files than WebP or JPEG at similar quality, but it is newer: WebP and JPEG are accepted by far more apps and services. Convert when the destination asks for JPG or PNG.

Why will my app not open AVIF?

The app predates AVIF or needs an update. Support keeps spreading, but it is not universal yet. An updated browser opens AVIF today, and a PNG or JPG copy works almost everywhere.

Does converting AVIF lose quality?

Converting to PNG preserves the decoded pixels. Converting to JPG applies JPEG compression, which can lose a little detail, and flattens transparency to white. HDR and metadata are not retained in TotImage.
